Whipped sugar scrubs, or also known as whipped body scrubs are made by whipping a botanical butter such as Shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter and/or a Soap Base. Sugar is mixed in after the butter/Soap is whipped full of air. The result is a thick scrub that is incredibly moisturizing.
A whipped sugar scrub is perfect for the winter months when skin dries out and leaves behind much dead skin. The sugar exfoliates the skin, while the oils and butter restore moisture. If using a soap base, then the soap cleanses your skin. Using this regularly will help keep your skin smooth and soft all winter long.
Here is a basic recipe!
(We used this recipe when we first started making whipped scrubs. As well as a whip soap butter base. It is really good for beginners! Beware if you live in hotter climates!)
Recipe: Whipped Sugar Scrub (Butter Based)
Ingredients:
- ⅓ cup Shea butter
- 20 drops of essential oils or fragrance oils
- ⅛ cup of coconut oil
- ¼ cup avocado oil (or any other light oils) (We used grapeseed and sunflower oil)
- ¾ cup Coconut Sugar, Pure Can Sugar, Brown Sugar or White Sugar (We used white sugar)
Instructions:
- Place Shea butter, coconut oil, and your light oil into a medium-sized bowl.
- Beat the mixture until its consistency is thick and silky. (Sometimes you may have to beat multiple times, especially if you live in hot climates)
- Add ½ cup of sugar and beat on low until it’s thoroughly combined.
- Add the rest of the sugar and stir the mixture to distribute it evenly.
- Add essential oil or fragrance oil, stir it again.
- Scoop the mixture into a clean jar and add a label if desired.
Recipe: Whipped Sugar Scrub (Soap Based)
Ingredients:
- 300g Whip Soap Base or also known as Whip Bath Butter.
- 700g Coconut Sugar, Pure Cane Sugar, Brown Sugar or White Sugar (We used white sugar)
- 15g fragrance oils or around 20 drops of essential oils
- 30g light oils (We use grapeseed and sunflower oil)
- Optional: Colorants (We use skin-safe soap dyes and mica powder to color ours)
Instructions:
- Place the whip soap base into a medium-sized bowl
- Beat the soap base until its consistency is thick and silky. (For us, it typically takes no more then 3 minutes. Depending on brand of base you use. Some take longer for thick consistency)
- Add the sugar and beat on low until it’s thoroughly combined.
- Add the light oil and stir the mixture to distribute it evenly.
- Add essential oil or fragrance oil, stir it again.
- Optional: Add colorant and stir once more until completely combined.
- Scoop the mixture into a clean jar and add a label if desired.
How to use
Uses:
- To use your whipped sugar scrub, apply it to the skin in circular motions. If using soap based whipped scrubs, you may want to add a dab of water to activate the soap. Wash it off with warm water once sugar is dissolved.
- Be careful while washing it off in the shower or in the tub, as it may make the floor slippery depending of what oils you use.
- We recommend that you don’t use this scrub on your face or on any opened wounds. The oils and thick butter could cause breakouts and worsen the wounds. The sugar will worsen wounds and will be to exfoliating for them and on softer skin.
